When the spring sun pops out, reach for Austria’s favorite white wine, Grüner Veltliner. It’s similar in texture and body to Riesling but differs in taste. The wines show tropical or citrus fruit flavors when very ripe, and savory or herbaceous flavors when less ripe. This snappy, crisp Grüner Veltliner is perfect for celebrating longer, warmer days. It has engaging aromas of lemon blossom and pineapple and flavors of persimmon, kumquat, white pepper and citrus zest.

For fifty years now, the Winzerkeller Andau has provided its roughly 300 members with the opportunity to do together that which would be impossible for the individual. That’s because the association of growers, under central leadership, pool their resources and bottle wine together under the label of the cooperative. And since Austria’s entry to the EU in 1995, the coop has spared no expense—to the tune of some 10 million euros—in modernizing its grape-collection technique and winemaking procedures, to the point of reaching a very high standard of quality.
One of the most food-friendly grapes, Grüner Veltliner is versatile enough to take down any number of food-pairing paths. The Winzerkeller Andau partners well with everything from meaty fish and shellfish to salads, vegetables, chicken and pork, as well as hard-to-pair foods like asparagus and artichokes. For a brighter take, emphasize the wine’s fruit flavors with accents of citrus or tropical fruits. We paired it with an easy lunch option of Beer and Chipotle Battered Fish Tacos.
Andau is a little community of some 2,400 souls, situated less than a mile from Austria's border with Hungary. Back in the days of barbed-wire, checkpoints and machine guns, this neighborhood had very little to rejoice about. All that has changed.
