This Tempranillo example is a pure expression of the untamed beauty of the Toro region. It is unoaked and shows wonderful juicy fruit and civilized tannins. Bold aromas of plum, black raspberry and baking spice lead to a smooth textured palate that’s full of black fruit, spice and wild herbs.

Valduero is a family company with a long history in Ribera del Duero where they produced premium wines. In 1996, they acquired a new property in the Toro region to focus on the local Tempranillo variety, which is called Tinta del Toro. The goal was to produce a range of younger wines that they could not offer in Ribera del Duero due to the soil, climate and grape type. The Toro region is in the province of Zamora in north central Spain. The Duero River flows through the region on its way to Portugal where it is called the Douro River. With a continental climate, the winters are cold and the growing cycle for the vines is about 230 days, giving greater alcohol potential and color to the fruit, but with less fixed acidity. Gregorio Garcia Alvarez runs the wineries with his two daughters.
This Tempranillo is medium-bodied with good concentration and characteristic spiciness. Its subtle yet firm tannins help it to pair well with a wide range of pork, beef or game dishes, from chops and steaks, to Serrano ham, to a hearty roast. For a traditional Spanish pairing, try lamb, whose meaty flavors will work beautifully with the wine. Fresh green herbs like tarragon, rosemary and thyme will be excellent accents.
Tinto de Toro, has been the primary grape grown in the Toro region since the times of the Christian reconquest from the Moors, when an influx of bishops, priests, scholars and members of the royal family created a sophisticated market for fine wines in the 11th and 12th centuries.
