The Sierra Madre is a classic California Chardonnay that sports a bold oak component while remaining poised and balanced. There are vibrant apple and brioche notes on the nose and the wine is juicy and rich with lemon, pineapple and creamy vanilla flavors.

For years, a who’s-who of coastal California vintners have put out single-vineyard wines—chiefly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir—from the Sierra Madre Vineyard, located in the extreme northwest corner of the Central Coast’s Santa Maria Valley. A few years back, owners Doug and Jan Circle hired the supertalented Steve Rasmussen (formerly of Talley Vineyards, one of the region’s most respected boutique wineries) to make a few choice parcels of grapes into wines under their own label. A result is this succulent Chardonnay, which gets its satiny texture and toasty vanilla notes from aging in French oak barrels. Starting with the 2012 vintage, industry veteran Lane Tanner will inherit the reins from Steve who will focus on his other projects.

Chardonnay’s subtle flavors are easily overwhelmed by spicy and pungent foods, so serve the Sierra Madre Chardonnay with mild preparations of shellfish, fish or white meats like chicken or veal. The wine’s silky texture will make a wonderful match with pâté or with butter and cream sauces; its acidity will cut the richness of these foods.

From Sierra Madre Vineyard, you can smell the ocean from the vine-covered bluffs that rise up on sandy soils just 15 miles from the salty Pacific.
