Gascony in southwest France is primarily known for Armagnac brandy. There is, however, a thriving sanctuary for intensely flavorful reds located in an area called Madiran facing the Pyrenees Mountains. The vineyards that the Plaimont holds were originally planted in the 4th century BC. In the 10th century, Benedictine monks founded the Madiran abbey and improved the quality of the wine grown there. Pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela, to the south in Spain, would stop at the abbey, enjoy the wine and sing Madiran's praises throughout Europe. The Plaimont winery was founded in 1979 by a handful of determined winegrowers who are credited with restoring the reputation of the noble region. The wines of the Madiran are dominated by the Tannat grape, which is blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

In the book The Red Wine Diet, wines from the Madiran are credited with the highest levels of antioxidant compounds, which may explain why the region's population enjoys exceptional health and longevity.
