While Rioja may be known for its red wines, Ostatu also makes this Rioja Blanco from 85% Viura and 15% Malvasia. The vines are 60 to 70 years old and sustainably farmed. The Blanco has honeydew melon and mineral aromas with hints of plantain and citrus blossom. It’s a bright, fresh and clean wine with yellow plum and pineapple flavors and nice backbone of minerality.

Bodegas Ostatu is a family winery located in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa region in the town of Samaniego. The Saenz de Samaniego family has been in the area for many generations and made wines in a style suited for early consumption. Recently, with the help of Hubert de Bouard de Laforest of Chateau Angelus, the focus of the winery changed. De Bouard realized that remarkably old vines, combined with the unique orientation of the vineyards, could produce drastically different wines able to compete on the global stage. By changing over from carbonic maceration (fermentation in the grape) to traditional fermentation, and by reducing yields in the vineyards, the wines expressed a dramatic change in style and quality.
This is a rich, ethereal wine on both the bouquet and on the palate. To complement and not overpower the wine, try my Lemon-Baked Sea Bass with Spinach Salad. The Valencia orange, melon and saline attributes in the wine will work wonderfully alongside the fragrant lemon and sweet spinach in this simple yet elegant dish.
Carbonic maceration is a winemaking technique, often associated with the French wine region of Beaujolais. The resulting wines are fruity with low tannins and ready to drink. Conventional fermentation produces wines with a structure for long-term aging and involves the crushing of grapes to free the juice from the pulp and skin.
