The nose offers bright black cherry and blackberry fruit scents with an earthy undertone of underbrush and a lingering edge of espresso coffee. Forward, springy black fruit is backed with suggestions of coffee and baking spices. This is a smooth and well balanced wine.

Mustiguillo’s founder, Toni Sarrión, did very well in the booming Spanish construction business. In addition to growing traditional French and Spanish grape varieties, he wanted to preserve and promote an almost forgotten grape of the region: Bobal. Mustiguillo’s team thinks the grape can make world-class wines when farmed correctly, with properly restricted yields. For its efforts in devising new techniques to turn Bobal into a starring grape, Mustiguillo was awarded the designation of Vino de Pago for producing wines of true distinction and unique regional expression. The Bobal for this bottling comes from Mustiguillo’s Terrerazo Vineyard, which lies at 2,625 feet on rocky limestone terrain with sandy, clay loam soils. The wine was aged for 10 months in French oak.
Beef and boldly seasoned pork roasts, gutsy Mexican dishes and dark turkey meat make good choices to complement the Mustiguillo Mestis’s spice and earth flavors. The note of spice in the wine makes a mildly spiced mole a natural pair (just go easy with the chilies). Juicier and softer than a Tempranillo, the Mestis will also pair well with lighter proteins such as chicken, veal and especially sausages.
Bobal is considered a native Valencian grape and is perfectly adapted to the conditions there. In fact, it’s said to fare relatively poorly anywhere else, despite the vigor and resilience that it demonstrates in its native environment.
