Marche wines are some of the most enjoyable table wines around, full of ripe, juicy fruit and with enough structure to pair well with food. They also tend to offer high quality at good prices. The Montecappone’s classic nose exudes warm black cherry and plum with hints of rosemary and anise. These flavors continue in the mouth, buoyed by good acidity and soft, chewy tannins. It’s a simple, yet immensely satisfying wine.

The Marche (Mar-kay) is a largely unheralded region of Italy that is tucked between Umbria, Emilia- Romagna and Abruzzo with a gorgeous coastline on the Adriatic. Montecappone was founded in the town of Jesi in the Marche in the late 1960s. The Bomprezzi-Mirizzi family, a successful wine retailer in Rome, acquired the winery in 1997 and immediately set out to update and tighten the operation. They focused on restoring the vineyards, which now amount to an impressive 170 acres in and around the choice spots of Rosso Piceno. Under the new regime, Montecappone focuses on the native wines of the region: Verdicchio (white) and Montepulciano and Sangiovese (red).
Marche reds tend to not only pair well with a variety of foods, but they can also suit a range of occasions, from celebratory to casual. Try it with a hearty beef stew or grilled lamb chops served with fresh tomato compote. It will also go beautifully with any kind of pasta or meat sauce.
