After a damp, cold spring, August proved to be perfect, and the 2008 vintage reflects the fact that the grapes were allowed to mature late, gaining delicacy and elegance. The result is a highly aromatic wine, dominated by notes of green apple, green melon, white peach and citrus. There's a good texture and palate weight with lively flavors of tart lime, white grapefruit and under ripe apricot. Notice a slight effervescence and the hint of seashell in the dusty minerality.

Vinho Verde wines are the most popular white wines from Portugal. The wines are crisp and dry and meant to be drunk young, hence the name Verde, which translates as green but means young. Vinho Verde wines are also known for having lime green highlights. The Vinho Verde wine region covers 130 miles from the Douro River in northern Portugal to the Spanish border and achieved its DOC status in 1984. The wines have been known since Roman times but only recently have found favor here in the US. The Lurton family hails from Bordeaux but acquired and developed vineyards in five countries. Pilheiros is one of three properties in Portugal.
This wonderful Spanish wine calls out for something from the sea. Since it is Dungeness crab season, I am going to prepare one of my family's all time favorite foods, my Famous Roast Garlic Crab. The crab will work fantastically with the Alvarinho's sea shell nuances, the wafts of citrus and the luscious minerality. Alternatively, make a simple grilled fish with lemon or serve with a fresh goat cheese.
Pilheiros is the Portuguese name for the holes and cracks in the low walls supporting the terraces, where grape vines were once relegated to grow while "more important" crops reigned on the terrace surfaces. The wines are thus the living testimony of a long winegrowing tradition and their promotion to the terraces.
