The Dakine Merlot is crafted in an elegant and restrained style showing good texture and appetizingly grainy tannins. The “secret sauce” is the blending of 19 percent Malbec, which is grown in the Dakine Vineyard alongside the Merlot. The red currant, cedar and dried herb aromas have a hint of chocolate and on the palate black cherry predominates with notes of forest floor, mocha and graphite.
Red currant, cedar, dried herbs, milk chocolate and mocha.
The Longboard team says balance, harmony and nature are prerequisites for great surfing and great wine. Founder Oded Shakked was born in Israel and raised on three continents. Growing up a hundred yards from the beach just north of Tel-Aviv, he was splashing in the Mediterranean by two months old, and later became one of the area’s first surfers. While studying winemaking at U.C. Davis (can’t beat the homework!), Oded worked harvests in Napa and in Bordeaux, but his heart was captured by the rich diversity of Sonoma County, now his home and workplace.
For pairing purposes, most Merlots fall somewhere between Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon in terms of overall power and density. The Longboard Merlot falls in the middle, leaning slightly toward the bolder end of the spectrum. While beef, lamb and pork are obvious contenders for a satisfying culinary partnership with Merlot, this medium-bodied offering will also be wonderful with generous and creative spice rubs and marinades that add complexity and perfume.
“Dakine” comes from the Pidgin Hawaiian language and is often used to describe a great event.
