The Don Vincenzo is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. There are dusty aromas of bramble, conifer and cocoa on the nose with scents of black cherry compote and vanilla. More black cherry is delivered on the palate with notions of kirsch and leather. Decant this wine for a good 30 minutes to enjoy its terrific structure and polished tannins.

Jericho Canyon is a rugged area at the northeast end of the Napa Valley in the Mt. St. Helena foothills. Originally given in a land grant to a veteran of the Civil War as payment for his services, the ranch is situated along the road to the old Silverado Mine, a spot made famous by Robert Lewis Stevenson in his book Silverado Squatters. The property had been used as a cattle ranch since the 1930s, but it showed evidence of a pre-Prohibition vineyard alongside of Jericho Creek. In 1990, Dale and Marla Bleecher replanted the old vineyard and extended it up the canyon, terracing extensively due to the steepness of the terrain. With the terraces following the contours of the land, it is reminiscent of an old world style vineyard. Winemaker Jade Barrett, born and raised in New Zealand, was lured to the estate in 2006.
This is a wine that begs to be paired with food. The fine astringency and balanced acidity in this mediumbodied wine makes it well suited for a great variety of foods and cuisines. The Merlot blend could use a good grilled steak to match with its balanced fruit, spice flavors and elegant tannin, but I suggest my Spiral Rolled Filet of Beef with Pesto.
