I Veroni is best known for exceptional Sangiovese wines but they also make a few stellar whites. The Blanco di Toscana is all Malvasia grapes with intense aromas of yellow flowers, white peach, apple and citrus blossom. There’s freshness and zip with flavors of apple slices, peach and powdered sugar. The wine is definitely more aromatic than one would expect from the region.

Located north of Chianti Classico around the town of Rufina, the Chianti Rufina appellation sits at a higher elevation than the surrounding hills, close to the Apennine Mountains. The estate of I Veroni was once part of the sprawling feudal domain of the land-wealthy counts of Guidi, who warred with the dukes of Florence on and off for much of the Middle Ages until their defeat in the early 1400s. Having passed through a few other patrician families’ hands since then, today the estate is owned by the Malesci family, which has guided its restoration into a top-flight Chianti estate. It now boasts close to 40 acres of vineyards, planted mostly to Sangiovese, and even more land planted to olives, the source for the estate’s prized extra-virgin olive oil.
Put some antipasti together for the Blanco di Toscana. Bruschetta would go particularly well. Alternatively, serve with a flaky pastry dessert or with Manchego cheese.
Malvasia Bianca grapes can produce wines in a variety of styles ranging from very dry to very sweet. In some cases, Malvasia is used to make very rich flavored dessert wines by drying the grapes before crushing. This method allows the sugars and flavors to be concentrated as the water in the grapes evaporates.
