From a vineyard 1000 feet above Dry Creek Valley, this Zinfandel is bright and jammy and fantastic with food. Inviting brambly fruit aromas are joined by scents of camphor, cedar and green bell pepper. A core of black fruit flavors has a hint of cardamom and cumin.

Blackberry, black cherry, raspberry liqueur, roasted meat and violet.

The Horse & Plow Winery merges the best of old-world and new-world techniques to produce authentic, hand-crafted wines from Northern California. They utilize organic farming, small-lot fermentations and traditional techniques to make balanced, food-friendly and site-specific wines. The goal is to make worldclass wines from organically grown grapes. Owner Chris Condos has been making wine since 1995 and has worked with many unique varietals. He started making wine in 1995 at Pine Ridge Winery in the Napa Valley and is also the co-owner of Vinum Cellars. His wife, Suzanne, is the owner and winemaker at Lutea.

Zinfandel tends to be high in both tannins and alcohol, so it needs rich food with enough fat and protein to bring out its softer side. Grilled meats, especially fatty selections like duck, sausage and pork or beef ribs, fit the bill nicely, as do braised stews of lamb, beef or game. If you are serving leaner, milder meats like poultry or pork chops, accompany the dish with a boldly flavored sauce so the wine won’t dominate. Sweet-spicy fare, including barbecue and savory Asian sauces containing soy sauce and sugar are also a great option. My Stuffed Mozzarella and Chili Paste Hamburgers are an easy match.

Dry Creek Valley has over 70 wineries, nearly all family owned. While you can discover a range and diversity of world-class wines, Zinfandel enjoys a special reputation.
