Provence is known for both al fresco dining and for Rosé wines. It’s fair to say that the Chateau du Rouët is among the finest producers in Provence. Grown on the picturesque slopes of the Esterel Mountain range and a stone’s throw from the very fashionable Antibes and Cannes, Chauteau du Rouët is a quintessential Provincial Rosé and a quintessential summer wine. This beauty captures all the joys of living in the earthly paradise of Provence. It is one of the most consistently delicious wines from the region, made of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah. Very stylish and elegant with red berry fruit aromas and flavors, it displays a dusty minerality ending with a crisp, clean and very refreshing finish. Aaahhh!

Prior to the French revolution, Chauteau du Rouët was owned by the Marquis de Villeneuve, who supplied Louis XVI’s court with wine. Louis XVI was nicknamed “Louis le Dernier,” or Louis the Last, as he was the only king of France to be executed. Since the French revolution, the property has been owned by the Rouët family, and the current château was built in 1880. The climate is warm and dry-Mediterranean to the very core, with some evening cooling influences from the nearby hills. Côtes de Provence is a wide area covering Côte d’Azur (French Riviera) from the cities of Marseille to Nice. Soils, grapes and techniques may differ, but one thing is ubiquitous and eternal: the sun.
Nothing speaks of summertime more in France than a bottle or Rosé and a salad. You could not go wrong with a French classic like a Nicoise, which is similar to what we Americans call a Cobb salad, but I suggest my Barely Smoked Salmon with Pea and Potato Salad which was a big crowd pleaser when I ran Tra Vigne in Napa.
Half of the Rosé wine made in France comes from Provence! And 80% of the wine made in Provence is Rosé.
