This is a cool climate Syrah from the Anderson Valley in Mendocino County, which is about two and half hours north of San Francisco. The savory aromas of black pepper, pipe tobacco and bacon are balanced by sweet notes of black cherry, honey and mission figs. On the palate, jammy flavors of ripe blackberry are prominent with the slight taste of olive tapenade and salami. The texture of this is wine is both mouth filling and luxuriously rich. Abundant yet balanced tannins will give this wine a long life, allowing it to age gracefully for many years.

Breggo sits on 203 acres of heaven in the heart of the Anderson Valley north of Sonoma, which Doug Stewart bought in 2000 after making a name for himself in the organic ice cream business. The grapes for Breggo wines come from the top three local growers, who liked the idea of having a winery with a tasting room on the highway, making vineyard designates from the best fruit in the Anderson Valley. Little did they know that Breggo would acquire such acclaim so rapidly and be hailed by important wine critics as an exciting new discovery. After years of preparation, Breggo planted 25,000 of its own vines in 2008, and so a new adventure begins.
This northern California Syrah is a fine match for my Whole Roasted Rack of Pork with Dried Cherry Stuffing--it's wonderfully rich from the panatone bread stuffing, a little bit smoky from the roasting of the meat and a tad fruity from the addition of dried cherries. Serve a crisp green salad and/or a leafy green vegetable on the side to balance out the menu.
