This young, modern Rioja impresses with lively fruit balance and style. It has aromas of black plum and black raspberry with hints of game and fall leaves. Plum and cherry dominate the palate with notions of wild herb and conifer. It’s 100 percent Tempranillo with no oak treatment—soft and easy-drinking!

Bodegas Viña Ijalba was founded in 1975 and has 80 acres under vine. The winery was the first Rioja winery to convert to organics, and unusually for the region, all grapes used for the wines are 100 percent estategrown. To be called Rioja, wines must be made from grapes grown not only in the Autonomous Community of La Rioja, but also in parts of Navarre and the Basque province of Álava. Rioja is further subdivided into three zones: Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa. Many wines have traditionally blended fruit from all three regions though there is a slow growth in single-zone wines.
Tempranillo makes a particularly apt accompaniment to just about any pork dish, from grilled chops to Serrano ham or a cured roast. Lamb chops with rosemary and garlic or a well-seared hanger steak would also pair well. Tempranillo’s fine structure also gives it the finesse to go with traditional Spanish paella, whose savory saffron with rice, sweet peppers and charred seafood or meat will harmonize with the wine’s ample fruit.
La Rioja was taken by Napoleonic forces in the Peninsular War and remained solidly in French hands until 1814. Fortunately for the Spaniards, they got it back when the British helped rout the French from Spain.
