Dry and crisp, this delicious Riesling enjoys scents of orange zest and white flowers. It’s fresh and lightly floral, with tangerine and apricot flavors.

For ambitious winemakers who are really into Riesling, there are dozens of regions around the world where one can make fantastic wine. Unfortunately for Kuriyama Tomoko, none of these is in Japan, which explains, in some sense, how Tomoko got to the Rheingau, the German region that’s the source of some of the world’s greatest Rieslings. After years of study and apprenticeship in Germany, Tomoko landed at Altenkirch, a 174-year-old estate near the Rheingau town of Lorch. Altenkirch’s 50 acres of gnarled vines cling to the Rhine River’s vertiginously steep slate slopes; from them, Tomoko makes classically structured Rieslings of riveting minerality and purity. This cuvée is her most approachable, with clean citrus flavors and a kiss of sweetness.
Riesling is one of the world’s great food wines, pairing well with everything from spicy Asian food to delicate seafood, salads and vegetables. Made in a lighter style, the Altenkirch will shine with sushi, shellfish and light poultry dishes in particular. We have paired it with our Grilled Chicken Marinated with Mango Vinegar and Tarragon.
Feinherb means “fine-tart,” and is a relatively recent addition to German wine terminology. Rather than tart, it means this wine is very faintly sweet.
