The Blaufränkisch grape makes juicy, spicy red wines that are exceptionally food-friendly, like this bottling from Austrian vintner Alex Schreiner. The bouquet delivers earthy aromas of licorice and pepper with a hint of juniper. The wine is fresh and full with spicy plum, cola and mushroom flavors.

While best known for its aromatic Riesling and Grüner Veltliner, Austria also turns out excellent reds, mostly from Burgenland, a region south of Vienna along the Hungarian border. While the name Blaufränkisch doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, wines made from this red grape possess a grace that the name lacks, with supple tannins and fresh acidity. Alex Schreiner, an ambitious young vintner from an old winemaking family in the town of Gols, helps his father with the family winery but also makes a few wines under his own label, including this juniper-tinged Blaufränkisch.
This Blaufränkisch pairs well with savory, earthy dishes. Try it with big bone-in cuts of heritage pork that capture the true flavor of traditional pork. Other options include roasted game birds like squab or guinea hen, marinated for a day with salt, pepper, garlic and herbs, and served alongside roasted parsnips or a well-seasoned polenta. For accent flavors, take inspiration from the wine’s herbaceous notes and look to green herbs like thyme, fennel and rosemary. For an earthy match, use mushrooms.
Blaufränkisch has been called “the Pinot Noir of the East” because of its spread and reputation in Eastern Europe, particularly in Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia.
