This easy drinking, refreshing white wine is a blend of the Franken region’s top three white grapes. The star of the show in this example is the Silvaner grape, an ancient variety that reaches more glorious expressions here than anywhere else. Earthy and mineral are the terms usually used to describe it, though it’s also known for its purity and intensity. Bacchus is a flavorful, exuberant grape typically blended with Müller-Thurgau. This blend is smooth, aromatic and complex and fills the mouth with bright, exotic fruit.

The Franken region is centered on and around the town of Würzburg in Bavaria and follows the bends in the Main River. The continental climate here produces some of Germany’s best wines, including whites of great minerality. This wine comes from two friends in different countries. Joachim Binz is from Germany and has been in the wine business since he was 17. Today he runs his own business exporting high-quality German wines. Thomas Bratt lives in Sweden and founded a successful wine-importing house when he was in his late ‘30s. The two met in the early ‘90s, though the first vintage of their wine was not produced until 2008.
A crisp blend like the Binz+Bratt can pair well with poultry, fish and vegetables, as well as spicy Southeast Asian and Indian food. This wine is also wonderful with pork and cured meats. Its unusual combination of fruit and earth also make it a refreshing match for savory dishes featuring wild herbs and mushrooms.
Joachim Binz and Thomas Bratt like to say that they didn’t put their names on the bottle for personal prestige, but rather to underscore their personal commitment to what they sell.
