Grüner Veltliner is Austria’s signature white wine and the ancient Stift Göttweig Benedictine wine estate takes immense pride in their national treasure. The wine is animated on the nose with notes of citrus, red apple and rosewood. You may pick up notions of tangerine zest and a pleasing stony minerality. On the palate, it’s zesty and bracing with flavors of green apple, pear and spice.

The Göttweig Monastery wine estate has a tradition of more than 900 years. With 26 hectares of vineyards in the Wachau and the Krems valley, it is among the largest in the region and, due to its continual operation since 1083, one of the oldest in Austria. The Monastery's founding document mentions many localities of Lower Austria for the first time, as well as vineyards and vintners located there. This early record of viticulture in the Göttweig documents is of special importance for Lower Austria.
Grüner Veltliner is versatile enough to go down any number of food-pairing paths. This wine partners well with everything from meaty fish and shellfish to salads, vegetables, chicken and pork, as well as hard-to-pair foods like asparagus and artichokes. Try stepping up the herbaceous edge in the wine with fresh peas, bay leaf, basil or fennel. Cumin, coriander and other warm spices also tend to work well with Grüner Veltliner, whose brisk acidity can handle a bit of spice. For a brighter take, emphasize the wine’s fruit flavors with accents of citrus or tropical fruits.
The Benedictine Stift Göttweig monastery is situated on the eastern edge of the well-known Danube Valley area, the Wachau, and is perched 449 meters above sea level on the southern banks of the Danube.
