Barbera is Piedmont's most straightforward, juicy red wine, and the Virna delivers on the promise. Fermented and matured in large oak vessels for ten months and in bottle another six months before release, this clean, fruit-driven Barbera has both old world and new world charm in its raspberry, black cherry, tobacco, cedar and forest floor aromas and focused plum, blackberry, chocolate, cedar, green tea and subtle forest floor flavors.

Piedmont, in northwest Italy, has a peculiar climate and terrain that produces some of the world's most unique wines, from coveted Barolo and Barbaresco to more affordable and juicy food-loving Barbera and Dolcetto. The Barbera grapes for this wine were grown in southwest-facing vineyard in the Montforte d'Alba sub-zone of Piedmont at an altitude of about 1,000 feet in clay, blue marl and tufa soil. Lodovico Borgogno's family has owned vineyards in the Barolo region since 1720 and hold themselves to exceptionally high standards of farming. Lodovico's equally passionate daughter, Virna, works alongside her father in every aspect of wine production. Virna and her husband, Gianni Abrigo, also a winegrower himself, work together in the winery to craft wines with equal regard for tradition and technology.

Barbera's relatively high acidity works well with acidic foods like tomatoes that are difficult to pair with many other wines, and its subtle earthy notes match well with garlic, mushrooms and any savory risotto. Piedmont is principally known for Barolo and Barbaresco and also for Asti, possibly the easiest to drink sparkling wine.
