Because the Lodi appellation of northern California has a very similar microclimate and soil type to the wine regions near Cape Town, South Africa, Mike Matson planted Pinotage vines. The resulting wines have good varietal character, exhibiting a more fruit forward style than their South African counterparts. Cedar, spice and blueberries explode from the glass, and hints of sage and nutmeg interplay to add complexity to the aromas. Flavors follow in the spice and black fruit theme with notions of tobacco, black pepper and earth lingering on the finish.

Mike and Renae Matson combine over 40 years of marriage with 30+ years of co-managing various businesses, the latest being Vino Con Brio and Amorosa Inn and Gardens. They have three adult children living in Northern California as well. Mike has a particular interest in bringing unique grape varietals from other countries to Lodi and in promoting Lodi wines. Renae runs the bed & breakfast, Amorosa Inn and Gardens, and manages all of the weddings and events at Vino con Brio. Vino con Brio is the largest grower of Pinotage outside of South Africa and the only foreign member of the Pinotage Society of South Africa.
The exotic flair of this Pinotage makes it a natural for wild game, but it is equally suited for beef, pork roast or chicken depending on how they are prepared. Let's keep it simple. Break out the grill and make my BBQ Chicken Toes.
Lodi is particularly known for Zinfandel but is also the childhood home of Robert Mondavi, the visionary winemaker who helped lead California wine into international prominence. Mondavi was known for saying that of all the things he learned in the wine business, the most important was that wine was meant to enhance a meal. We could not agree more.
