Aromas of blueberry, violets and rose petals and orange rind intrigue the nose, while blueberry and dark fruit flavors preside over a palette supported by fine tannic structure. This wine is soft, supple yet serious. Totally lovable.

Pozzo Buono means excellent water well, and the Vicari winery is located on Via Pozzo Buono named for the well where Morro d’Alba’s early settlers gathered their water. Today, a fountain marks the spot. Rosso Piceno is the name given to wines from the Adriatic region of La Marche that are generally blends of Montepulciano and Sangiovese, though other local varieties can be included. Vicari’s Rosso Piceno, for example, also includes 15 percent of fruit from their prized Lacrima di Morro d’Alba vineyards. The result is a dynamic drinkable red wine with the unmistakable personality of the Adriatic coast.
Stews, ragouts and roasted meats are perfect for the intense black fruit of Vicari. Thanks to its velvety tannins, the wine is excellent with chicken, turkey, pork and veal as well as with robust red meats. Match the wine’s richness with a corresponding richness on the plate; good choices include sausages, bacon-wrapped meats and slow-simmered stews. The savory and smoky notes in this wine correspond well to grilled or smoked meats and to savory and earthy (rather than fruity or sweet) seasonings, such as mushrooms, legumes and root vegetables. I myself like the idea of my recipe for Lamb Shanks with Mushroom Bolognese.
The Lacrima di Morro d’Alba grape name translates to the ‘tears of Morro d’Alba’. There is no romantic story behind the name. The pragmatic reality is that the grapes’ thin skins split easily, allowing ‘tears’ of juice to escape.
