Varietal Birthplace Year
Grenache Blanc Somontano 2009
Garnacha Blanca is thought to have originated in Spain as a mutation of the red version of Grenache. It then spread across the Pyrenees to France, finding a second home in the Rhône. This rich, textured wine delivers an unctuous mouthful of bright fruit and firm minerality. In the bouquet, honeysuckle and rosemary aromas are joined by tropical nuances. Flavors of nectarine and papaya give way to a hint of honey and notions of lemon and orange.
Papaya, Queen Anne cherry, honeysuckle and rosemary.
Located on a high plateau in the mountainous area of Huesca (Aragon), the wine region of Somontano lies at the foot of the Pyrenees Mountains. The name Somontano actually means "Under the Mountain." The region is gorgeous with green fields and hills, wildflowers, medieval hamlets and lonely hilltop monasteries. The principal wine town is Barbastro, with most of the wineries close by. The climate in this part of Spain is continental with snowy winters and hot summer months, and extremely sudden changes in temperature when the seasons change. There are roughly 2,700 hours of direct sunlight per year for optimum growing conditions. The Secastilla Valley vineyards are located in Somontano's far northeast region and enjoy a special Mediterranean microclimate.
Fish, shellfish and salads that incorporate tropical fruit will be good matches for the wine. I recommend my Cataplana recipe, which has Iberian origins (the Portuguese Algarve region), can be made with mussels or clams, and is easy to prepare.
In the year 1064 during the Siege of Barbastro 50,000 people were killed in taking the city from the Moors. A year later in a counterattack the Moors easily retook the city, making it a bad couple of years for Barbastro.
