Made in an old-world Rioja style, this wonderfully balanced Tempranillo has aromas of blackberry, clove, toasty vanilla and saddle leather. It has flavors of cherry, strawberry, black plum and raisin with notes of juniper berry, iron, clove and cinnamon. This Reserva is a cut from the classic cloth of Spanish Rioja, displaying an elegant palate and soft, polished tannins.

Every December, the editors of the prestigious U.S. publication Wine Enthusiast release their selection of the best 100 wines of the Year. On the 2011 list, the Viña Eguía 2007 Reserva was ranked 18th which is an impressive showing! From a bodega run by the illustrious Muriel group, this wine comes from vineyards in Rioja’s Alta and Alavesa sub-regions. The traditional Crianza maturation sees this wine spending 12 months in American oak barrels and a further 12 months in bottle before release.

A good Rioja is the definitive accompaniment to tapas, especially those of red meat or cured cheeses. We paired it with our Lamb Stuffed with Fig Mostarda but it is pretty delicious on its own or with some Manchego cheese and a cracker.

The label is amusing. There is a hand on an open book surrounded by the words In vino veritas (In wine there is truth). Below that, it says in Spanish La verdad y nada mas que la verdad (The truth and nothing but the truth). Further below there is more rambling in Spanish about truth and wine.
