The dominant grape in the Rueda region of Spain is Verdejo, which has achieved bright freshness and aromatics with plenty of acidity through modern winemaking. The bright lemon color mimics aromas and flavors of fresh citrus. Additional notes of melon and guava with a bit of minerality in the background add depth to this refreshing wine.

Rueda is located northwest of Madrid on the flat plain of Castilla y Leon, a bleak and arid place where Christians and Moors clashed fiercely for centuries as they struggled for control over the Iberian Peninsula. The Verdejo grape is thought to have travelled here from North Africa when the Moors controlled the region. Since the 1980s Rueda's Verdejo wines have improved dramatically through practices such as night harvesting, cold fermentation and the use of nitrogen gas to defend against early oxidation.This is the second vintage of a custom blended Rueda wine created specially by Antonio Sanz and the importer José Pastor. The wine is 90% Verdejo and 10% Viura.
This clean, crisp and refreshing Verdejo is a perfect late summer wine full of wonderful bright citrus fruits balanced with tropical notes. Try it with my take on a terrific summer salad, the Grilled Avocado and Tomato Salad with Green Goddess Dressing. Take ripe avocado halves, lightly grill them (yes, grilled avocados) and place on top of juicy tomatoes, dressed with sweet red onion and all topped with green goddess dressing. Who would not love this recipe and this pairing?
Most wineries harvest Verdejo grapes at night, so they enter the cellars at cooler temperatures, which contains any oxidation.
