The wine is a lovely ruby red color with vanilla-laced fragrances of wild berries. There are also scents of black plum, bay laurel and hibiscus. Keep swirling and notions of seared meat and tobacco emerge. This is a rich, vibrant Montepulciano with good varietal character. There are meaty flavors of black plum, blackberry, with notions of lavender and violet.

Located near the Adriatic seaside town of Ancona in central Italy's Marche region, the Tre Castelli winery is a fourth-generation business now run by two brothers. The Vignedileo is named for their father and translates to "Leo's vines." The estate is particularly well known for indigenous white Verdicchio wines, which are the pride of the region. Montepulciano, which originated in neighboring Abruzzo, is the most widely planted red variety.
Montepulciano is a hearty wine, packed with flavor and good acidity, but relatively low in tannins. It matches well with a variety of spices and herbs and complements salty foods, but it doesn't necessarily require protein-rich dishes to tame its moderate tannins. Its most often paired with lamb and is a good match for my Tangine of Lamb Stracotto with Spring Onions. Sausages, savory vegetable dishes and strong cheeses are also good matches.
The Marche town of Castelfidardo was the birthplace of the accordion. Hundreds of styles from around the world are on display in the local museum.
