A sweet perfume of melon, passion fruit and creamy melon wafts from the glass. On the palate, crisp and lively flavors of lightly grilled pineapple, nectarine and white peach skins are joined by a note of almond shell. This dry white has a rich mid palate and is a very enjoyable example of Pinot Blanc from the region.

Alto Adige is nestled in northern Italy between the Dolomite foothills and southern Alps. This region's mountainous terrain and cool temperatures yield white wines of particular intensity. Set at the foot of Mount Tshöggel, the small town of Terlano (also known as Terlan) claims a winemaking history dating back 2,000 years. Today, its most favored grape is Pinot Bianco, revered for creating wines of unique longevity. This fresh, young wine expertly knits tropical fruit flavors into a seamlessly balanced palate.

The quintessential choice for a lazy lunch in the sunshine, this refreshing wine will sip beautifully on its own or with a light meal. Dishes with a sweet note and an accent of tropical fruit--think Asian salads and creamy shrimp curry with pineapple--will pick up fruit flavors in the wine, while Pinot Bianco's naturally high acidity will match the acid of a salad dressing and cut the richness of a curry. For a specific recommendation, try my Famous Roast Garlic Crab or my Tuscan Shrimp with White Beans. I lean towards the shrimp recipe, which calls for a generous amount of extra virgin olive oil along with basil, garlic and a bit of chili.

Pinot Bianco is an ideal choice to accompany fish and shellfish, and if you travel to the stunning Lake Garda, not far from Terlan, you can expect to find the wine recommended as an accompaniment to the lake's flavorful freshwater fish, a specialty of the region.
