Müller-Thurgau was created in the late 19th century as a cross between Riesling and Sylvaner. Early maturing and well suited to cool climates, it has done exceptionally well at the foot of the Alps in Italy's Trentino-Alto Adige region, where mild summers with considerable temperature ranges between day and night help shape the highly aromatic wines. The Terlan displays good varietal character with citrus blossom and tropical fruit notes on the nose with pear and pineapple on the palate.

Alto Adige is nestled in northern Italy between the Dolomite foothills and Southern Alps. This region's mountainous terrain and cool temperatures yield white wines of particular intensity. Wine has been made for more than 2,000 years in Terlano, located in northern Italy's South Tyrol region, where the subtle microclimates yield exceptional whites with multi-faceted flavor. Terlan's vineyards, on south-facing slopes at the foot of Mount Tschöggel, have a sandy, porous soil that captures the sun's heat and allows water to drain, keeping the roots dry and warm. Founded in 1893, Terlan was one of the first producer cooperatives and won a silver medal at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900; today, it remains a small operation devoted to quality.

This wonderful Müller-Thurgau is full of tropical fruits on the bouquet. It has good depth and works well with rich seafood dishes that engage with the fruity notes in the wine. The wine will work magically with the soft smokiness of the salmon, the earthiness from the potatoes and the light herbal accents from the peas, tarragon and chives in the vinaigrette in my Barely Smoked Salmon with Pea and Potato Salad. Also appropriate for sole, snapper or a simple roasted chicken.
