St Gregory Reserve Pinot Noir

$25.00

Varietal Birthplace Year
Pinot Noir Anderson Valley 2006

The grapes for this Pinot Noir come from two vineyards in the western edge of Anderson Valley close to the Pacific Ocean. This award-winning wine is alluringly dark with inviting aromas and flavors of black cherry, wild strawberry and hints of cola and smoky, toasty oak. Keep swirling the glass and interesting complexities reveal themselves. This wine has full tannins and a rich, velvety mouthfeel that will keep you reaching for the glass.

Black cherry, licorice, anise, wild strawberry, black pepper, light mushroom and forest floor.

Vincenzo Graziano and his wife, Angela, first planted vineyards in Mendocino County in 1918. In the late 1920s, Vincenzo had to depend on selling grapes to home winemakers and bootlegging wine to support his family. In the 1940s, after Prohibition and the Depression, Vincenzo, along with other local grape growers, formed the Mendocino Vineyards Winery, which was eventually sold and merged into the historically significant Cresta Blanca Winery in the town of Ukiah. Today, Gregory Graziano, Vincenzo's grandson, carries on the family winemaking tradition. He makes beautifully crafted wines from some of the best fruit in the Mendocino.

This wine comes from Anderson Valley, home to some of the best mushroom foraging in northern California. The rich combination of fruits and spices in the wine will make a terrific match for the panoply of flavors in my Mushroom Crostata with Blue Cheese--rich, unctuous mushrooms blended with cream, garlic, shallots and Parmesan cheese are then put into a delicate pastry crust and crowned with blue cheese and baked. If you do not care for blue cheese, or even if you do but feel like you would rather have something soft and creamy, try substituting goat cheese. I think the cheese substitution might make the pairing even better.

St. Gregory was the first monk to be elected pope in the year 590. History notes he was quite fond of wine.
