Aptly named, the Spicerack "Punchdown" is rich and spicy with bold pepper, paprika and smoky aromas. Keep swirling and notions blackberry, plum and a hint of plantain waft from the glass. This is a complex, balanced wine with bright dark fruit flavors, cinnamon and clove and a long, delightful finish. Aged in neutral barrels, it has beautifully honed tannins and no new oak to compete with the exceptional cool-climate fruit.

The "Punchdown" is the only wine made under the Spicerack Vineyards label. It comes from two unique vineyards on the Sonoma Coast where thin, sandy soils and gusty winds define the site and deliver wines that are reminiscent of Rhône Valley Syrah. Owner Jonathan Pey studied in France and later earned a BS degree in Agriculture and an MBA in California. He enjoyed a career in the ultra-premium wine industry and has worked with some of the best--Domaine Louis Jadot and Chateau de Pommard (Burgundy), Robert Mondavi & Sterling Vineyards (Napa Valley) and Australia's iconic Penfolds.
The rich fruit and spiced flavor profile in this red blend will bring out the best in my Seared Pork Tenderloin with Cocoa Spice Rub. The chocolate and spice combination might sound a little batty, but trust me--you are going to be using this spice mixture more than once. It socks in the moisture of the tenderloin and picks up the spice flavors of the wine. Serve with a side of my definitive mashed potatoes.
The Spicerack Syrah is called "Punchdown" to reflect the many times the cap was punched down during fermentation to keep it immersed in its dark and delicious fermenting must.
