This cool climate Syrah enjoys perfumy cherry, blackberry and rose-petal scents. This is a well-made wine with focused blackberry flavor and notes of black pepper and eucalyptus.

Based in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley, winemaker Fred Scherrer is best known for his Pinot Noirs— which makes sense, since Pinot is the region’s calling-card red grape. But Scherrer also makes terrific Syrah here, too—an offbeat choice, given that many assume the valley’s climate is too cool for this Rhône grape. But one winemaker’s “too cool” is another’s “just right,” and the sleek, spicy reds that Scherrer achieves here have made him a stealth favorite of wine insiders for years.
Pair the Scherrer Syrah with pork, veal or red meat of any sort, especially lamb and game, whose earthiness will work well with the wine’s savoriness. Stews and hearty casseroles make excellent stick-to-your-ribs choices, while grilling will add a bitter char to meats that will help offset this young wine’s tannins. Try earthy accents like olives, lentils, mushrooms and root vegetables, or play to the wine’s fruit flavors with dried or stewed fruits or chutneys. For something simple I like my Portobello Mushroom Grilled Like a Steak.
