Scarpone Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

$25.00

Varietal Birthplace Year
Montepulciano Abruzzo 2007

This crafted Montepulciano has a dark garnet color and a nose of baked plum, blackberry and black currant. Give it some time in the glass and scents of tea, rose petal and cacao emerge. It's a balanced easy-drinker with deep ripe plum flavors and notes of fig, bramble, graphite and mocha. Firm tannins have been mellowed, but not overwhelmed, by the oak. Drinking beautifully already, but will gain complexity with 5-10 years of bottle aging.

Anise, redwood, cacao, baked plum, black currant and graphite.

Due east of Rome, the Abruzzo region descends from the highest peak (Gran Sasso) of the Appenine Mountains down to the Adriatic Sea. Once a long journey from Rome over high mountain passes, it is now only 2 hours away by autostrada and a 10-kilometer-long mountain tunnel. Lorenzo Scarpone, who made a name for himself in the wine and restaurant world of San Francisco, fulfilled a dream by buying a small vineyard in the prestigious Colline Termano applellation near where his family had farmed for over 300 years. In 2005, the first Scarpone Montepulciano d'Abruzzo was made with the assistance of highly-respected local enologist Loriano di Sabatino. The wine was aged for 14 months in new small French barrels.

The high altitude Abruzzo terrain is classic sheep country and the elegant sweet, concentrated fruit flavors and silky textures of the Scarpone, are a delicious and natural pairing with lamb. My Lamb Shanks with Mushroom Bolognese is just the thing. Earthy, rich, and succulent, this dish will fill your home with wonderful aromas as it cooks. Serve it with an Insalata Tricolore (tri color salad of endive, radicchio and arugula) and a crusty loaf of bread and you and your guests will fully satiated.

Since 1989, Lorenzo's Villa Italia imported Italian terroir driven wines to the U.S. It must be fun to finally import his own creation from where he grew up farming with his father.
