Despite the name, which translates as little sweet one, Dolcetto is a dry red wine, with characteristic bitter almond and berry fruit aromas on the nose, and rich, lively fruit on the palate. By comparison with many other Italian red wines, especially Barbera, it is low in acidity and ubiquitous in the Piedmont region. The Rivolia has aromas of black cherry and red licorice and shows spritely flavors of ripe pomegranate and dried cranberry. Best enjoyed with a meal.

Renzo Castella is a family run agricultural company which dates to the early 1900s. Located right at the entrance of the medieval town of Diano d’Alba, the family has a long and distinguished history of growing grapes. Grandson Renzo is the first member of the family with an oenology degree, which prompted the launch of their own label in 2001. Diano d’Alba has only three thousand inhabitants but is famous for the large number of high quality Dolcetto producers.

The Rivolia Dolcetto complements all sorts of foods particularly pasta and pizza but will also stand up to grilled meats. It’s an every day kind of wine that will also work very well with my Mozzarella and Tomato Panini—a simple satisfying sandwich kids large and small will love!

Piedmont may be best known for majestic Barolo wines, but Dolcetto is the people’s favorite.
