Montefalco, where Raina is located, is known for its powerful reds made from the Sagrantino variety. This red, which is Sangiovese-based, is brighter and more fragrant with scents of plum, blueberry, licorice and toffee. There's clean, crunchy fruit here with flavors of black currant, black cherry and rhubarb with a dark chocolate note.

An austerely beautiful region that is sometimes overlooked in wine conversations, Umbria is one of the rare landlocked provinces of Italy. Its dry climate and poor, stony soils are wonderful for producing deeply flavored, dusty reds. In 2002, young viticulturalist Francesco Mariani and his partner, Andrea Mattioli, acquired an old 40-acre farm in the region's premier wine-growing area. Planting classic Umbrian varieties, they began producing wines of great character and depth in an amazingly short time.
This juicy Italian red is perfect with rustic, country-style Italian cuisine. Try it with sausage and peppers, pork chops, pastas with tomatoes and salty cheeses. For a real crowd pleaser, I suggest my Gnocchi with Wild Mushroom Sugo.
