This wine is 78% Chardonnay from Block Eleven and 22% Roussanne from Block Ten at Bien Nacido Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley. Both are custom blocks planted exclusively for Qupé in 1997, on the hillside just opposite the winery. With aromas of citrus, pear, hazelnut, honeysuckle, green fig and minerals, this wine has headier aromas than previous vintages due to the higher amount of Rousanne in the blend. Flavors of lemon, pineapple and dried pineapple mix with notes of sage, thyme and tarragon.

Qupé Wine Cellars is located on the Bien Nacido Vineyard in Santa Maria, California and shares a production facility with the iconic Jim Clendenen from Au Bon Climat. It was Clendenon who inspired Qupé founder Bob Lindquist to start a winery. Qupé is dedicated to producing handcrafted Rhône varietals and Chardonnay from California's Central Coast. They employ traditional winemaking techniques to make wines that are true to type and speak of their vineyard sources. The goal is to make wines with impeccable balance that can be enjoyed in their youth, yet because of the good acidity from cool vineyard sites can also benefit from aging. Qupé is committed to sourcing grapes from some of the best and most prestigious vineyards in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties.
Sometimes I can't get away from the classics and Chardonnay and roast chicken is certainly one of them. Try my new recipe for Pollo al Mattone, which is a take on the classic chicken cooked under a brick. It brings back memories of my childhood. Serve with a green salad and a crusty loaf of bread. Dip the bread in a side of extra-virgin olive oil drizzled with a few drops of Balsamic vinegar.
