Made from indigenous Portuguese grapes, (Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional and Alfrocheiro) this wine really goes to show why experts are increasingly citing Portugal as the new source for bang-for-your-buck big, red wines. The Colheita is supple, charming fruity wine with scents of cinnamon, and allspice. It's fresh, spicy, and bursting with delicious flavors of red fruit, potpourri, and tobacco with an underlying tone of minerality.

Alvaro Castro is a true original in the world of Portuguese wine and his two estates are among the leaders of the appellation. The Pellada estate dates back to the 16th century and wine was made there until 1945, when the family reverted to selling to the local cooperative. Alvaro took control in 1989 and re-established the winery at Saes and has been building a reputation for both red and white wines of great complexity since. He is considered one of the leading pioneers in the new wave of high-quality, artisanal wines from Portugal's Dao region.
My Toasted Spiced Ham Drizzled in Honey is so perfect for this wine. Another option is my Bistecca with Balsamic Roasted Onion Crostini. The rich, red meat paired with the balsamic roasted onions is glorious and a natural with this Portuguese red. For a cheese pairing, how about a wonderful aged Mountain Gorgonzola drizzled with roasted walnuts?
