This wine shows great structure and complexity. The extended time on the skins and ageing in oak barrels delivers a wine with beautiful black cherry and dark plum flavors with notes of spice, orange and tar. It’s a dense and nicely realized “Superiore” that’s a solid food wine.

Alberto Antonini is one of the superstar winemakers of Italy, and Poggiotondo is his family estate. This wine represents beautifully the contemporary state of Chianti where the quality and style of the wines has changed dramatically for the better over the last 20 years. Gone are the days when the wines were produced for quantity rather than quality. By decreasing the yields, farming more meticulously and planting better strains of Sangiovese, conscientious vintners are now making wines with greater concentration and structure and sometimes blending in varietals like Merlot, as is the case with this wine.
The classical leanness and racy acidity of this Chianti demands, in traditional Tuscan fashion, that the wine either be served with similarly high-acid foods like tomatoes or with well-marbled meat, which the wine’s acidity can help to break down. Consequently, earthy red meat dishes with a tomato-based sauce make a terrific counterpoint. Sausage, veal or duck will serve this wine well.
The property of Poggiotondo is located at Cerreto Guidi, a medieval village built around 1300.
