Piro Piro Piccolo is a collaborative project between Martellotto Wines and the Demetria Estate. Greg Martelloto’s family can trace their winemaking heritage to the 17th century in southern Italy. His grandfather brought traditional winemaking practices with him when he arrived in America in 1909, and Greg has followed in his footsteps, making wines of remarkable consequence, consistency and varietal expression. The Demetria Estate is a family owned winery with prized sustainable farmed vineyards in the Santa Rita Hills appellation of Santa Barbara. The appellation is uniquely situated to receive the maritime influences that create the ideal climate for the growing of exceptional wine grapes and a diverse group of talented growers and winemakers are producing some of California’s most exciting Pinot Noirs, Chardonnays and other varietals. As with any new region, the winegrowers and winemakers have developed a camaraderie stemming from their love of this region and the excitement of the achievements made thus far.

One of the classic Italian food and wine pairings of all time is Pinot Grigio with roast chicken. Try the Piro Piro with my recipe for Chicken with Roasted Lemon and Rosemary Sauce and you won’t be disappointed. Boneless chicken breasts are cooked with potatoes, and the sauce is flavored with roasted lemon juice and rosemary and then finished with a little butter.

Piro Piro Piccolo (sandpiper in Italian) is a small bird commonly found on the beaches of Santa Barbara.
