Chile's windswept Pacific Coast has become one of the world's best sources for crisp, zesty whites, like this vibrant, aromatic Sauvignon Blanc. It has fruity aromas of green melon and papaya and is bright and fresh with zingy tropical fruit flavors and a clean finish.

Located just 45 minutes northwest of Santiago, the Casablanca Valley is arguably the best-established of Chile's coastal wine regions, meaning that it's been turning out fantastic cool-climate wines--mostly Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay--since the early 1990s. Viña Peñalolén winemaker Jean-Pascal Lacaze makes this bottling from purchased grapes that come from one of the valley's coolest spots, which helped them retain their zippy freshness in an unusually warm vintage. Viña Peñalolén is the name that Clos Quebrada de Macul owners Ricardo and Isabel Peña give to their wines made from purchased grapes. The Peñas' estate vineyard in the warmer Maipo Valley is the source for Domus Aurea, a wine that's one of Chile's benchmark Cabernets.
This classic Casablanca Valley Sauvignon Blanc will be great with shellfish, flaky white fish, salads and anything with goat cheese like my Warm Goat Cheese and Pancetta Salad.
Did you know that European vines were brought to Chile by Spanish conquistadors and missionaries in the 16th century around 1554? Local legend states that the conquistador Francisco de Aguirre himself planted the first vines.
