Dornfelder is an early ripening grape, and Pinot Noir is late ripening. In this unusual 50/50 blend, the grapes are vinified separately, then matured together in a large old oak cask. The wine enjoys smoky tea aromas and floral notes of hibiscus and geranium and shows good concentration of appealing dark berry flavors with hints of bergamot, blood orange and violets. Moderate tannins give way to an elegant, dry finish.
Tea, hibiscus, geranium, rosehips, violets, plum, cherry and raspberry.
Red wines from Germany, not widely available, are largely consumed on the home turf. Rudolf Anheuser is the 13th generation to run the Paul Anheuser Winery, which dates back to 1627 and is known as one of the best producers in the Nahe region. The Nahe is one of Germany's smaller wine regions and is named after the river that flows through it and into the Rhine. The family own 25 vineyards in seven separate villages along the river. Two members of the 10th generation emigrated from Germany to America in 1842 and founded what is now the Anheuser-Busch brewery in St. Louis.
I love to cook foods that perfume the house with wonderful aromas. My Spiced and Honey Glazed Ham is so perfect for this wine and the season. The combination of spices and sweetness from the honey is complex, sweet and spicy, just like the wine. Another simpler match particularly for the day after Thanksgiving when you've still got a house full of people and a refrigerator full of turkey, dressing and cranberries is my Turkey/Cranberry/Dressing Panini. Keep the good times and good food rolling with this delicious leftover recipe.
Taste this up against a Budweiser and decide which family operation you'd prefer to visit!
