Varietal Birthplace Year
Dolcetto Piedmont 2011
This Dolcetto is a dark, earthy expression of the varietal. It’s compact, dense and succulent yet retains a bright, juicy acidity and freshness. The bouquet shows classic notes of black cherry, menthol and bay laurel leaf. In the mouth, flavors of blackberry predominate, with hints of dark chocolate, forest floor, game and smoke.
Black cherry, dark chocolate, cedar, smoke.
Located right at the border between the Castiglione Falletto and the Monforte d’Alba appellations of Barolo, the brother and sister team, Marco and Tiziana Parusso, are growing 100 percent of their own grapes in 18 different parcels between the two sub-appellations. The Langhe is a part of Piedmont, the region that borders France and Switzerland in Italy’s northwest corner. Nebbiolo is its most famous red grape and typically yields wines whose high acidity and heavy tannins require extended aging to soften. This Dolcetto bottling is from the fourth-generation Parusso winery, which also produces several single-vineyard Barolos from the Nebbiolo grape. While the Barolos get a lot of attention, Parusso’s Piani Noce is certainly one of the elegant and refined Dolcettos being made in Piedmont and is a huge overachiever for its price point.
Dolcetto is great with hors d’oeuvres and simple main courses. It complements hard aged cheeses such as cheddar, Gruyère and Parmigiano-Reggiano; spicy salumi; and traditional Italian antipasti such as roasted peppers and olives. For main courses, roasted poultry of any sort, as well as pastas with meat or mushroom sauces, are perfect matches for this earthy, juicy offering.
The Italian word dolcetto means “little sweet one”, but it is not certain that the name originally carried any reference to the grape’s sugar levels since the wines are nearly always dry.
