Piedmont is best known for red wines made from Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto, but this wine is a blend of all three, with a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon. On the nose, red currant aromas are joined by dried herbs and a scent of leather. This is a very approachable, easy-to-drink wine with pleasing flavors of baked plum and black cherry with notes of violet, leather and coffee--an uncomplicated red with a Piedmontese character that speaks to the soil and the estate where it was born.

Founded in 1921, Paolo Scavino winery is principally known for exceptional Barolo wines but also produces a full range of Piedmont bottlings including Barbera, Dolcetto and various Langue red and white blends. Paulo's distinguished legacy continues through his son Enrico, who now manages the estate with his two daughters. The family has seven separate holdings around the historic towns of Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, La Morra and Roddi, and the winery is universally accepted as one of the top producers of the region.
Big Italian reds are particularly flexible with food; high acidity and low tannins means they are able to stand up to meat but can still pair well with meaty fish such as grilled fresh tuna. The Paolo Scavino is perfect with a rich salumi platter accompanied by some fontina, pecorino or parmesan cheese or even pasta with a rich tomato sauce. Having said that, I think it is a fine match for my Pepperoni, Macaroni and Cheese "Lasagna Style," an easy to prepare dish that is excellent comfort food for weeknights.
In the Langue, they say that the footsteps are slow and measured, time does not run, gestures repeat themselves and fragrances are concentrated in the soil. No wonder it is the land of Barolo and truffles!
