Nine Stones was founded by Len Evans, who did more to advance the cause of wine in Australia than any other individual. This delightful, full-blooded Shiraz from the renowned Barrossa Valley has a wonderful purple and dark red color. On the nose, boysenberry and Bing cherry aromas mix with menthol and eucalyptus. You'll also pick up hints of mocha and dark chocolate. It's a fruit-forward wine, dense and meaty, with flavors of licorice and black fruit; it's velvety and fleshy on the palate and has a long, polished finish.
Dark chocolate, creamy vanilla, Bing cherry, menthol, eucalyptus, cinnamon and cola.
Nine Stones founder Len Evans is known as the Godfather of the Australian wine industry. He has been described as a pioneer, visionary, statesman, as an impeccable wine connoisseur, wine writer, bon vivant, legend of the long lunch, wine icon, internationally renown wine judge, chairman and director, winemaker and raconteur and so on--all true and valid descriptions. He passed on in 1976, but the winery he founded lives on through his partners. The name Nine Stones celebrates the Celtic history of Len Evans; the Celts left many groups of standing stones, often believed to be Druid or tribal meeting places, and nine stones was a magical grouping thought to reflect the nine planets.
My good friend Jan Birnbaum recently opened a restaurant in San Francisco called Epic Roasthouse, and he is one heck of a great chef. Jan's food is rich, robust and full of flavor, just like this wine. Let's try his recipe for Jan Birnbaum's New Orleans-style Baby Back Beer Ribs. Serve with some good old-fashioned traditional style baked beans. You could even spike the beans with a little bourbon, just to stay in the New Orleans state of mind.
"You only have so many bottles in your life, never drink a bad one." --Len Evans
