The wine displays scents of apricots and nectarines with a hint of lime zest. It’s lively, elegant and lightbodied and offers up fresh flavors of candied lemon and juicy red apples, carried on a crisp palate that has a delicate hint of sweetness.

This zesty Riesling comes from the Mosel, Germany’s most prestigious wine region and home to the greatest Rieslings in the world. Vintner Nick Köwerich owns 12 acres of vineyards in Leiwen, a small town on the banks of a middle stretch of the Mosel River, where a steep mountain range turns the course of the river into a twisting path along its base. Carved out of blue slate, Köwerich’s vineyards are so steep—at a slope of up to 60 degrees—that he uses a winch hooked to a rail to help haul baskets of freshly picked grapes to the winery below. The stony, blue slate soils absorb warmth during the day and release the heat in the evenings, providing the grapes with precious extra ripening. Köwerich makes just three wines each year, all from Riesling grapes. The Einblick (“Insight”) #1 is a light, mouthwatering white that is fermented entirely in stainless-steel tanks. The lack of oak keeps the flavors bright and pure.
Riesling is perhaps the most food-friendly wine around, able to pair with everything from salads, fish and pork to dishes that would obliterate most wines, like fiery Asian fare and slightly sweet foods. With its touch of sweetness and low alcohol, the Einblick #1 Riesling is an ideal wine for spicy foods. (When a wine is high in alcohol, fiery ingredients accentuate the alcohol and dampen the fruit flavors.) Acidic ingredients like vinegar and citrus fruits will harmonize with this white’s zesty palate, while foods with a bit of sweetness will find a corresponding sweetness in the wine’s touch of residual sugar.
