Napa’s potential to make robust, potently ripe wines is on full display in this red blend from one of its native sons. The nose brims with scents of cassis, dark chocolate and smoke and the palate is full, jammy and rich.

Trent Moffett is one of the rare souls who actually grew up in Napa Valley. He spent his formative years working in the vineyards and wineries, and labored under some of Napa’s most esteemed winemakers and consultants. All that training is put to use for the unique, small-batch wines that he’s now making under his own label. In this powerful red from two Napa vineyards, Cabernet Sauvignon provides the substance, Cabernet Franc gives bright fruit and Syrah adds a measure of earthy spice.
While finely wrought blends like the Moffett Willow have a certain versatility, this suave, complex red really shines with meat. The wine’s intensity requires food with ample protein and fat as a counterbalance. Look to simply flavored beef, lamb and game dishes, particularly those that are grilled or roasted. Accent ingredients like lentils, mushrooms and root vegetables will play up the wine’s earthy notes, while fresh herbs and leafy green vegetables will harmonize with its minty, herbaceous character. We love it with braised short ribs and braised lamb shanks and especially with our suggested recipe of Grilled Prime Rib.
