The wine exudes classic fragrances of rose petals and lush black fruit while a core of rich raspberry and boysenberry flavors entice the mouth. Keep swirling, and you might notice a pleasing medicinal scent. This Alexander Valley Zinfandel is boldly textured with supple tannins leading to a seamless finish with hints of molasses, mocha and habanera pepper. This is a terrific Zin experience showcasing the distinct personality of the Stone Vineyard.

Mazzocco is a small family-owned artisan winery situated in the rolling hills of Sonoma County, nestled between the acclaimed Dry Creek and Alexander Valleys. Known for vineyard-designate Zinfandels—each robust and sumptuous yet individual in nature—from some of the most breathtaking mountain vineyards in Sonoma County, they also produce award-winning Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Winemaker Antoine Favero was born in the Champagne region of France, but at an early age moved with his family to a coastal fishing village in Peru. When Antoine was nine years old, he and his family relocated to Northern California’s wine country. He earned an enology degree at U.C. Davis and learned his trade at a number of northern California wineries before settling at Mazzocco.

Americans like to claim Zinfandel as our own, and the Mazzocco deserves to be paired with one of the true American repasts. My good friend Mary makes some killer ribs and her recipe for Mary Oh’s Baby Backs Ribs will work very well. The wine’s rich fruit expression will play marvelously with the brown sugar and barbecue sauce in the recipe. Serve with a side of my Roasted Potato Salad, baked beans or coleslaw and you have a meal that will become a classic summer ritual!

Most of Mazzocco’s grapes come from the Wilson Family Farms, a stunning 2,000 acre property with 220 acres under vine and a fabulous place to visit.
