Initial aromas suggest white flowers and citrus blossoms, followed by notes of apricot, peach and nectarine. Medium-bodied and with mouth-filling viscosity, the engaging palate is full with white peach, apricot and a hint of almond shell. The finish is long and clean.

Mas Carlot winemaker Nathalie Blan Marès is one of the brightest talents in the Costières de Nîmes, an upand- coming region in southern France. Formerly a part of the Languedoc, Costières de Nîmes was recently promoted to the more prestigious Rhône Valley, to which it’s adjacent. The boost reflects the increasing esteem in which its wines are held—thanks to ambitious vintners like Blanc-Marès, whose family purchased the Mas Carlot estate in the 1960s. For this pitch-perfect white, she keeps the wine’s fruit flavors front and center by aging the blend in tanks, not barrels. This wine reflects the extraordinary values that can be found in southern France’s Costières de Nîmes.
Shellfish makes a natural partner to the Mas Carlot: the sweetness and richness of scallops, crab and lobster echo the richness of the wine. Its intense flavors also stand up beautifully to chicken and pork. For accompaniments, try partnering the fruit and nut flavors in the wine with pork tenderloin with grilled peaches or Moroccan-style Cornish hens with glazed almonds and olives. Finally, look to silky-textured dishes made with butter and nut oils or olive oil, which will complement the wine’s understated richness.
Veterans of the Roman legions, who had served Julius Caesar in his Nile campaigns, were given plots of land to cultivate on the plain of Nîmes. Not surprisingly, they planted a lot of vines!
