With only 911 cases made of this single-vineyard Chardonnay, I knew on the first sip that we had better buy some before they disappeared. The mouthwatering aromas are reminiscent of my kitchen when I bake: pineapple-upside down cake, cinnamon, baked apple, Madagascar vanilla, oatmeal, apricots and marzipan. Having been aged in 100% French oak barrels, this is a rich and creamy wine that exhibits great weight on the palate. Flavors of white Rainier cherry, tarragon, European butter and a nerve of minerality keep this wine fresh, interesting and make it memorable. The length is long and ends on a highly pleasing note of white peach.

This truly American success story started 44 years ago, when Lupe Maldonado moved to California from Atacheo, a small farming community in Michoacan, Mexico. He worked throughout the Napa Valley and was at Sterling Vineyards when Peter Newton made him vineyard manager of Newton Vineyard in the northwest hills of St. Helena. With Newton, he found a home for more than 30 years before buying a 10-acre piece of land in the coolest, southern reaches of the Napa Valley. He developed his own vineyards and still lives amongst the vines that he planted and tends.
November and turkey are as classic a combination, and Chardonnay is a trusted companion at many Thanksgiving dinner tables around the country. I am not one to challenge a classic, and all those wonderful spice and fruit flavors in the Maldonado will work well with my Whole Roast Turkey on the Cocorico with Citrus Rosemary Gray Salt. The citrus in the salt will bring out the best in the wine. Serve with your classic T-day accompaniments, and my guess is once you've enjoyed this recipe, you'll be making it again soon!
