This Côtes-du-Rhône blend is made mostly from plump, fruity Grenache, with heft from Syrah and a touch of spicy Mourvèdre. It's and easy-drinking red that's smoky and perfumed, with aromas of huckleberries and violets and flavors of juicy black fruit edged in notes of tea leaves and green herbs.

The most famous southern red Rhône wines hail from Châteauneuf-du-Pape where Maison Bouachon began as barrel-makers. There is a saying in Châteauneuf-du-Pape that a barrel maker will eventually think of filling his own barrels, and in 1898 the Bouachons did just that. Today they are among the most prominent winemakers of the region. Grapes from this entry-level bottling come from Plan de Dieu, a hamlet north of Châteauneuf that got a boost in 2005 when it was promoted to a "Village" appellation, which is a rung up from basic Rhône wines.
This fragrant, supple red shows just how food-friendly the Grenache-based blends of France's southern Rhône Valley can be. Break in the barbeque season with my Grilled Lamb Chops, which are easy to prepare and suitable for hors d'oeuvres or as a main dish.
