|Lacrima di Morro d’Alba||Marches||2007|
Italy is a treasure trove of ancient rare grapes. The Lacrima di Morro d'Alba is unusual because it is still only cultivated in the commune of Morro d'Alba in the province of Ancona. The wine has a flowery bouquet of violet and rose geraniums with hints of bergamot orange and Indian spice. It's soft and velvety with sweet berry fruit on the palate and notions of chocolate and menthol. A luscious wine with firm tannins.
Huckleberry, violets, blackberry, black plum, orange zest, rose petal and menthol.
This bold red blend from Italy's Marche region is a superb example of a passionate small producer helping to bring an obscure region and a little-heralded grape--Lacrima di Morro d'Alba--to a new level of quality. In 1948, Sergio Landi purchased 12 acres of land in the tiny commune of Belvedere Ostrenze, in the Marche province of Ancona. There, he built a house with a wine cellar in the basement and planted vineyards on slopes facing the Adriatic Sea, about 15 miles away. The area's dry maritime climate and long sunlit days, alternating with cool nights and sea breezes, mitigate the harshness of the winter months and bring out the best in the grapes. In 1990, Sergio's energetic grandson, Luciano, took over management of the property and began modernizing the winery, with the goal of producing only top-quality wine.
Given the interplay of sweet fruit and earthy tannins in the Landi Gavigliano wine, something spicy comes to mind. My Brined and Spiced Chicken Cooked in Butter with Sherry Vinegar Sauce requires some patience, but it's worth the wait. The toasted spice rub in the recipe brings it all together.
Documents reveal that Frederic Barbarossa, a German Emperor who invaded Italy in 1158, was fond of wines from the Marche region.
